Grenadians have long been able to visit the United Kingdom without a visa, and the UK remains home to a large Grenadian diaspora. Since the UK introduced its Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme for visa-exempt nationalities, however, the process now starts online. A Grenadian travelling to Britain needs an approved ETA before boarding, in the same way that many visitors to the United States or Canada need advance clearance.
This article explains how the ETA works for Grenadian passport holders at the time of writing, what visitors can and cannot do in the UK, how transit through UK airports is treated, and why some applications are refused. The UK Home Office publishes the authoritative rules, and they have changed several times as the scheme rolled out, so check them before each trip.
What the ETA is, and what it is not
An ETA is a digital permission to travel to the UK, linked to the passport used to apply. It is not a visa: there is no interview, no consular appointment and no stamp. Applicants complete an online form or use the official UK ETA app, upload a photograph and a scan of the passport, answer questions about criminal history and immigration background, and pay a fee. Most applicants receive a decision within a few working days, and many much faster.
At the time of writing, an approved ETA is generally valid for multiple visits over two years, or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever is sooner. The fee has risen since the scheme began, so check the current amount on the Home Office site before applying.
Crucially, an ETA does not guarantee entry. It allows you to travel. On arrival, Border Force officers still decide whether to admit you as a visitor, based on the purpose of your trip and whether you meet the visitor rules.
What a Grenadian visitor can do in the UK
Tourism and family visits. The most common reasons for visiting, typically for up to six months per visit.
Permitted business activities. Attending meetings, conferences, negotiations and some training, provided you are not doing productive work for a UK organisation or being paid by one, with narrow exceptions.
Short study. Courses of up to six months are generally possible as a visitor. Longer courses need a student visa.
Medical treatment. Private treatment can be arranged as a visitor, with evidence of the arrangement and the funds to pay.
What is not allowed. Employment, self-employment in the UK, living in the UK through repeated long visits, and accessing public funds. Marriage or civil partnership needs a specific marriage visitor route.
Visiting students and relatives. Grenadian parents visiting a child at a UK university, or grandparents attending a family event, are classic visitor cases. Carry evidence of the relationship and of where you will stay, particularly for a long visit.
Applying for an ETA
The process is short, but small errors cause problems. The usual sequence:
- Use only the official UK government channels: the UK ETA app or the GOV.UK application. Avoid third-party sites that charge extra.
- Have the passport you will travel on, because the ETA is linked electronically to that passport number.
- Take a clear photograph and scan the passport as instructed; the app can read the passport chip on many phones.
- Answer the background questions accurately, including criminal convictions and previous immigration problems in any country.
- Pay the fee and wait for the decision by email. Do not book non-refundable travel until approved where you can avoid it.
- If you renew your passport, apply for a new ETA, because the old one is tied to the old passport.
Transit through UK airports
Many journeys from Grenada to Europe, Africa or Asia route through London. The rules depend on whether you pass through UK border control. Passengers who leave the airport, or whose connection requires them to clear immigration, need an ETA as visitors.
For passengers who remain airside at Heathrow or Manchester without passing through UK border control, the UK has applied ETA requirements differently at different stages of the rollout. Rules for airside transit changed in 2025, so check the current Home Office guidance for your specific routing before booking a connection through the UK.
Airlines check ETA status at check-in. If you need one and do not have it, you will not be allowed to board, regardless of what happens at the UK border.
Why ETA applications and entries get refused
Most ETAs are approved quickly, but refusals happen, and a refusal at the online stage is separate from a refusal at the border. Both are recorded and can affect later applications to the UK and sometimes to other countries that ask about previous refusals. The usual reasons include:
- A criminal conviction that triggers the UK's general grounds for refusal, especially custodial sentences.
- A previous breach of UK immigration rules, such as an overstay or working without permission.
- A previous refusal of entry or deportation from the UK.
- Inaccurate answers on the form, which can be treated as deception and lead to longer bans.
- At the border, inability to explain the purpose of the visit, insufficient funds, a pattern of long stays that looks like living in the UK, or evidence of intended work.
If the ETA is refused
There is generally no appeal against an ETA refusal. Instead, the refused applicant can apply for a UK Standard Visitor visa, which involves a fuller application, supporting documents and biometrics at a visa application centre. A visa application gives the chance to explain circumstances in detail, such as an old conviction or a past immigration issue, with evidence.
For families with relatives in the UK, a refused ETA is stressful but not necessarily the end. A carefully prepared visa application, with evidence of ties to Grenada such as employment, property or family, can succeed where the automated check did not. For complex cases, advice from a regulated UK immigration adviser is worth the cost.
Remember to disclose the ETA refusal on future applications, both to the UK and to other countries whose forms ask about previous refusals. Investor citizenship applications in the Caribbean typically ask about visa refusals too, and a refusal that is disclosed and explained is far less damaging than one that comes to light later.
How the ETA fits with other trips
The UK ETA sits alongside, not instead of, other travel permissions. A Grenadian planning a combined trip to London and Paris needs the UK ETA for Britain and, once it starts, the EU's ETIAS for the Schengen leg, each applied for separately through official channels. Time spent in the UK does not count towards the Schengen 90 days, and vice versa.
Ireland is a separate case again. The UK and Ireland share a Common Travel Area for their own citizens, but visitors from other countries must meet each country's entry rules. Check Irish requirements for Grenadian nationals before planning a trip that crosses between Northern Ireland and the Republic, and do not assume a UK ETA covers Ireland. Keep a simple note of which permission belongs to which passport and which country, especially for a family travelling together.
Practical tips for the Grenadian diaspora and visitors
Dual nationals. British citizens who also hold Grenadian citizenship should travel to the UK on their British passport and do not need an ETA. Those with UK indefinite leave to remain should travel with proof of that status.
Children. Every traveller, including babies, needs their own ETA.
Long visits. Six months is a maximum, not an entitlement. Frequent long visits can lead officers to conclude that someone is effectively living in the UK.
Investor citizens. ETAs are linked to the passport used. Investor citizens who also hold another visa-exempt passport should choose one and keep the ETA, booking and passport aligned.
Keep evidence. Return tickets, accommodation details and proof of funds help at the border, particularly for long visits or first-time visitors.
Frequently asked questions
Do Grenadians need a visa to visit the UK?
No visa is needed for short visits, but Grenadians must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling. The ETA is applied for online or through the official UK ETA app, linked to the passport, and allows visits for tourism, family and permitted business.
How long is a UK ETA valid for?
At the time of writing, an ETA is generally valid for multiple trips over two years, or until the linked passport expires if that is sooner. Each visit is typically allowed for up to six months. Renewing your passport means applying for a new ETA.
Can a Grenadian work in the UK on an ETA?
No. An ETA allows visitor activities only, such as tourism, family visits and business meetings. Working in the UK requires a work visa under the relevant immigration route, applied for before travel with sponsorship where required.
What if a UK ETA application is refused?
There is generally no appeal. The applicant can instead apply for a Standard Visitor visa, which allows a fuller explanation of circumstances with supporting evidence. For complicated histories, advice from a regulated UK immigration adviser is recommended.
Does a dual British and Grenadian citizen need an ETA?
No. British citizens should enter the UK on their British passport and do not need an ETA. Using the Grenadian passport instead could create unnecessary complications at the border, so keep the British passport valid.
